Art

Even though Omaha’s primary draw card is its relaxed, beachside lifestyle and the endless hours of enjoyment that comes with that, it also has more than its fair share of sculpture parks, art galleries and local artists’ and artisans’ studios for those craving culture away from the coast – there’s even a fantastic art house cinema just a few kilometres up the road in Matakana.

Sculptureum
Sculptureum

Just across the causeway from Omaha Beach you will find the recently opened and grandly named Sculptureum – a 10-hectare wonderland of three sculpture-filled gardens, six art galleries, a vineyard, and a top-end restaurant and bar. The complex contains more than 400 works, including pieces by Picasso, Cezanne and Rodin. Curator and owner Anthony Grant has spent the last seven years creating a place ‘for people who've been turned off art by boring displays and arrogant curators’. He says he wants to show that art can be fun and it can enrich your life. His Sculptureum certainly delivers on both accounts.

Brick Bay
Brick Bay

A 15-minute drive inland and down the coast is Brick Bay – a boutique vineyard, an extensive outdoor sculpture trail, and an architectural, award-winning restaurant, all found in the midst of an idyllic landscape of farmed pasture and native bush. The sculpture walk represents some of the most exciting and well known sculptors working in New Zealand today, with over 50 large-scale sculptures set in a landscape of towering native trees, majestic palms and precious kauri forest alive with birdsong.

Matakana Cinemas
Matakana Cinemas

A spectacular art-house cinema complex, featuring three dramatic theatres, which has become a huge draw card for the entire area. The cinemas feature cutting edge art-house, family and blockbuster films with state-of-the-art sound systems and spacious, luxurious seating.
